A dad of three has been jailed for three years after he bit of part of another man's ear in a late-night attack.

Andrew James Sword, 33, of St Ninian's Road, Carlisle got into a scuffle with James Laws in the Havana nightclub on Botchergate in Carlisle on January 31, 2019.

A Crown Court jury convicted Sword of a wounding offence - but cleared him of the more serious charge of intentionally causing the injury to the victim on December 11.

He had denied both offences but was convicted after trial.

Recorder Tom Gilbart told the court: "Just after 3am James Laws, the victim, went to use the toilets with a friend and you came in and asked about beak, slang for drugs.

"When you were told nobody had any you became aggressive and squared up to Mr Law's friend."

During a short scuffle Sword bit down on Mr Laws and despite screams begging him to let go, the biting continued.

The defendant was jailed for three years at a Carlisle Crown Court hearing this morning.

He must serve half of the term on licence.
