As pubs offering ‘substantial meals’ reopened this month in time for Christmas to serve food to their sorely-missed regulars, we decided to ask our readers where they will be heading for a festive treat meal over the coming week.

We have quite the range of options in today’s list from across our region, and if you are looking for inspiration for somewhere new to try in north Cumbria, you have come to the right place.

Anyway, in no particular order, here are the best places for a Christmas dinner, as decided by our readers...

1 METAL BRIDGE INN, CARLISLE

Reader Pat Kirkup expressed her gratitude for an enjoyable meal at this Carlisle venue last year.

Although she decided to stay at home this year, she does plan to return next year.

“We enjoyed a lovely meal at Metal Bridge last year! We will return next year hopefully.”

One reviewer was also keen to point out the safety measures that the inn had put in place too saying: “It’s a great spot with clean facilities. Importantly, it’s spacious so it felt safe.”

2 WILD DUCK, BRANTHWAITE, WORKINGTON

Reader Christine Patterson was unequivocal in her praise of this Workington favourite.

“Definitely Wild Duck Branthwaite in Workington. Beautiful food,” she said.

Fellow reader Mary Smart added: “I will get there one day.”

3 MAE’S TEA ROOMS, ULDALE

There was only one answer for reader Judith Smith who waxed lyrical about this popular destination in Uldale.

She said: “Mae’s tea rooms at Uldale. Sumptuous food and lovely atmosphere.”

Mark Nellist was also a fan of one particular component of the dish and made reference to the same homely feel that Judith Smith alluded to.

“Even the bread for bread sauce is home-made and the fire is roaring.”

4 LAKESIDE, BRAYTON, ASPATRIA

Reader Mary Wells-Walker picked out this Aspatria restaurant which is based at Brayton Park.

Reviewer Steve Bastable recommended the restaurant on Facebook saying: “The onsite restaurant is of the highest standard and the onsite staff are friendly and helpful.”

Another reviewer assured potential diners that Covid-19 protocols were in place: “All Covid protocols are in place – everyone socially distanced, staff with masks on. You couldn’t find a better restaurant within 40 miles of us. So glad it is right on our doorstep.”

5 HOME!

During this Christmas of all Christmases, many readers stated they would be staying home this year and enjoying the delights of a home cooked family meal.

From all at the News & Star, whatever you choose to do, we hope that you have a safe and enjoyable feast this Christmas!
