Shoppers are being encouraged to shop local this weekend and one business is championing the collaborative network it has set-up this year with other Cumbrian businesses.

Grasmere Gingerbread has partnered with businesses such as Hilary Yafai, Penrith Toffee Shop, and Pure Lakes to create new products and develop relationships throughout the year.

Joanne Hunter, co-director of Grasmere Gingerbread, said: “Since March we actively encouraged our existing suppliers to create dozens of exciting new products which we have sold through our online shop.

“I firmly believe that Cumbria, which was severely tested during Foot & Mouth and Storm Desmond, is at its best when everyone pulls together.

“If no man is an island, no business is either."

They have worked with businesses that sold through the gingerbread shop in Grasmere and in markets as well as established new partnerships with other businesses.

By working together to support other local shops, sales have been boosted during this difficult year.

Rachel Gow, owner of Go Your Own Way Apparel, said: “I grew up eating Grasmere Gingerbread so I was delighted when Joanne suggested working together and I was able to suggest two items to complement their existing range of gifts. “In Cumbria, small businesses must look to support each other and investigate where there might be overlapping areas of commercial interest.

“So many livelihoods can be boosted and secured by thoughtful collaboration.”
