ROADWORKS which disrupted drivers' journeys to their favourite fast food joints are finishing today.

Road resurfacing and patching works have been taking place between the Cornwallis Street and the Hollywood Park roundabout, home to fast food establishments KFC, McDonald's and Pizza Hut since Monday.

The works, which were scheduled to last a period of five days, have been taking place between 8pm and 6am each night. The resurfacing scheme involves milling out sections of the old carriageway and laying a new surface. It is hoped that the new surface will reduce road noise greatly from passing traffic for local residents as well as improving the quality of the surface. All white lines in the area have also be renewed. Access for local residents and deliveries for any businesses have been given access through the site. In a letter addressed to residents in the area, Highways Network Engineer Martyn Taylor said: "These works were planned before the second lockdown came into effect and we will be trying to complete works ahead of schedule considering the potential reopening of some businesses on Wednesday."

Readers voiced their concern about the roadworks interfering with their journeys.

Muriel Raine said: "There's another way in surely the road can't be closing that far up."

Pauline Gaskell said: "It will be great trying to get to work of a night."

Darren Gill said: "Everyone has a pair of legs, walk if you want the food."

The road is scheduled to reopen to drivers from today.
