AS MANY businesses reopened yesterday, Cumbria Tourism has taken the opportunity to remind people why it is so important to support homegrown trade.

The tourism sector woke up yesterday when lockdown ended and Cumbria Tourism MD Gill Haigh believes it is important to support hospitality businesses as many are going “above and beyond” for their communities.

“2020 has been a difficult year for us all. But one silver lining of the pandemic has been how everyone has come together. From clapping our NHS keyworkers to volunteers supporting their local community, it is clear that the Cumbrian spirit is stronger than ever, and we’re asking people to continue this during the Christmas period.”

Tourism accounts for £3 billion in the county's economy, £1.86 billion of which has been lost in 2020. After a challenging year, employers are looking to thank their staff. To meet demand Cumbria Tourism is working with businesses to offer discounts on its popular MyCumbria Card scheme, allowing them to give a lot back whilst spending a little.

Gill said: "Now we’re asking Cumbrian businesses to say thank you by encouraging their workers to support local when shopping and planning activities with friends and family."
