Dean Henderson's uncle says the Cumbrian goalkeeper's England debut has earned him £12,500 - thanks to a bet.

Martin Plunkett told The Mirror he had a £25 wager on Henderson playing for his country at odds of 500/1.

Plunkett said he put the bet on with William Hill when Henderson was 14, shortly before he left Carlisle United's academy for Manchester United.

And it paid off when the Whitehaven star came on for the second half of England's friendly against the Republic of Ireland recently.

"We told him we got confirmation from William Hill that the bet was alright so yeah, he was chuffed for us," said Plunkett, from Grimsby.

"He’s a good lad. He deserves it.

“Anyone you ever spoke to who knew about him would tell you he’ll go to the top.

“So obviously you have a little bet don’t you? To be fair, it was only William Hill that would take the bet.”

As well as his England breakthrough, Henderson has made three first-team appearances for Manchester United this season.

But with David De Gea still first choice at Old Trafford, the Cumbrian star has been linked with a loan move, with Leeds and Celtic among the clubs having been credited with interest in the 23-year-old.

Highly-rated Henderson recently said making his England debut was a dream come true.
