A gang armed with metal poles smashed the windows of a property in Carlisle in an attempted burglary, said police.

Cumbria Police said the group of about 10 males attempted to gain access to the property in Edwards Street, at about 7.50pm on Friday, before making off in three vehicles.

Nobody was believed to have been injured in the incident but detectives are urging witnesses to come forward to help with the investigation.

A police spokesman said: "A large group of around ten males attempted to gain access to the property on the street with at least three carrying metal poles.

"Suspects have smashed both front windows and forced the front door.

"The group then got into three vehicles including a silver Astra, a black estate and a further unknown vehicle."

The ages of the suspects, police said, are unclear.

Witnesses or anyone with information that can assist with the investigation, are asked to contact PC 2725 Kilday on 101, quoting log 162 of November 20.
