A councillor is speaking out after she said her attempts to get safety measures in place at a potential accident problem area were being ignored.

Councillor Gemma Dinsdale, who represents Corkickle on Copeland Council, said Willow Drive is like an ice rink.

She said: “As Willow Drive is located at the top of a hill it has managed to form a stream which runs from one side of the road to the other and which has grown massively in width over the years.

“I got onto Highways and Cumbria County Council last year asking them to take a look at the problem and provide a grit bin on the road as it always becomes icy in the winter and creates an ice rink in the middle of the road.”

“It’s over 12 months later and I’m still being ignored on the subject. It’s only a matter of time before a collision or accident occurs from residents skidding on ice.”

Gemma said the closest grit bin is down on the second level of the hill which means residents have to cross the stream and walk down an icy inclined pathway to reach it and then drag the grit back up.

She added that she has been asked to use a generic email address to contact the council, but never gets a response.

She said: “Anything that can be done to deter the stream in the form of better drainage or even just a grit bin being dropped off on Willow Drive will be much appreciated by all residents.

"I am extremely concerned about the wellbeing and safety of my residents especially as the days are getting colder and before long ice will appear again.”

A Cumbria County Council spokesman said: “Provisional investigations suggest it may be a leaking water meter.

"If so, United Utilities would need to resolve it, although we need to have evidence of this before passing to UU.

"The salt bin is located in close proximity to the area referred, at what is considered the most suitable, safe location.”
