A much-adored son and brother died after a long battle with mental health.

Nicky Green was found by his father at Stony Holme Golf Club, in Carlisle, after concerns were raised by his friends about his welfare, an inquest heard.

The 20-year-old, from the city, died at the Cumberland Infirmary on June 19 with his family by his bedside after the decision was made to turn his life support machine off.

During an hour-long inquest held on Friday, a number of statements were read to the court recalling the days leading to Mr Green’s death and his extensive history with mental health, and a number of failed suicide attempts.

On June 17 Mr Green enjoyed a family meal after finishing work before heading to a friend's house. Concerns were later raised when Mr Green sent a Snapchat which read “Night night, officially giving up this time.”

This prompted Chris Green, Mr Green’s dad, to frantically search for him. He eventually found him in the early hours of June 18, at Stony Holme Golf Club and called for help from emergency services.

A statement read to the court on behalf of Chris said: “On June 17 Nicky was his happy self; he loved being back at work and was his happy self.

“He said he was going to Chloe’s [a friends] for a bath and took his bait and work clothes.

“When she came back upstairs, he and all his stuff was gone. She looked outside and his van was gone.

“A friend of Nicky’s rang me, I missed the call. We later got a text to say Nicky had written something on his Snapchat story.”

Mr Green, senior, used a tracker to find his son.

He was taken into intensive care at the Cumberland Infirmary where his family made the difficult decision to turn off the life support machine.

Summarising the case, Coroner Kirsty Gomersall explained: “Nicky Green was a much-loved son and brother who clearly had a number of issues throughout his too short life, in which he was extremely well-supported by his family.

“It is clear Nicky was a kind and loving boy who would help his friends and neighbours. His aspiration was to build a bungalow for his mum [who suffers MS] who had been poorly when Nicky was a young boy.

“Nicky had made several attempts on his life when he was under the influence of alcohol.

“I find that Nicky had a history of mental health issues. He had a sudden mood crash late on June 17 after being happy in his family’s presence.

“Nicky was found by his father at Stony Holme Golf Club and was treated by police and paramedics. I find that Nicky died of a deliberate act undertaken by himself.

“I find that Nicky Green died from the medical cause of hypoxic brain injury due to hanging due to depression.”
