There will be changes to the usual Remembrance Sunday commemorations in Carlisle city centre this year.

However, Carlisle City Council has ensured that the important commemoration will be marked.

The Mayor of Carlisle, Councillor Marilyn Bowman will lay a wreath at Carlisle city centre’s cenotaph on Sunday, 8 November. A service of remembrance at Carlisle Cathedral will be streamed live at https://carlislecathedral.org.uk/ at 10.30am.

People are encouraged to observe a two-minute silence at 11am on their own doorsteps. Mrs Bowman, said: “Due to coronavirus restrictions we’re following national guidance but will ensure that this important commemoration is marked. We encourage residents to still observe the national two-minute silence but from their own homes. You can also continue supporting the Poppy Appeal - every contribution is welcomed.”

Councillor Elizabeth Mallinson, Carlisle City Council’s Armed Forces Champion, added: “We’re committed to supporting the Armed Forces and encourage our communities to continue to support the Poppy Appeal and show their respects on Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day. We are in unprecedented times but it’s still important that we recognise the contribution that the Armed Forces continue to provide to our lives.”

Please support the Poppy Appeal. Things might be different this year due to COVID-19 but every poppy counts. You can buy your poppy online at https://www.britishlegion.org.uk/
