2020 has definitely been a year Border and Lakeland Holstein Club members will all remember and one which will go down in history.

The club in its present form began in 1999 with the amalgamation of three clubs, The Border Counties Holstein Friesian Breeders Club, The Lakeland Holstein Friesian Breeders Club and the North Western Holstein Club. Today they have almost 300 members mostly in Cumbria but some further a field.

News and Star:

There is also a very active younger generation who have their own club – Border & Lakeland Holstein Young Breeders (HYB). They also hold stockjudging events, have an annual calf show and many social events. Most of these allow members the opportunity to compete at national level. The senior club sponsors a young member each year to go anywhere in the world to study cattle and normally visit an International Holstein Show.

This year they had some exceptional herds entered into the annual Summer Herds Competition with outstanding cattle on show for respected judges Malcolm and Jean Hutchinson of the Bowberhill prefix at Kirkby Stephen.Working to Covid rules and restrictions the competition was sponsored by Lely Center of Longton and Lloyd Tractors of Carlisle.

News and Star:

During the three days of judging, the Holstein Young Breeders excelled themselves with quality and enthusiasm making the judges decisions extremely difficult. Notable classes from the week were the Intermediate and Junior cow classes with 13 and 12 competitors for both classes respectively. There was quality in depth in both classes with Heathersgill Solomon Ruth coming out top in the Intermediate Cow class and Wormanby Motivator Rolls gaining top honours in the Junior cow class.

There were strong entries throughout all the classes, with the Holstein Young Breeders’ class difficult to place.’ It is lovely to see the depth of knowledge they all have of their calves and the skill and ability in how they are able to present them,’ said Mrs Hutchinson.
