A Christmas appeal is set to support some of the most vulnerable families in Egremont this year.

Egremont Town Council has announced its collaboration with schools in the area to identify families and children who may need support this Christmas, particularly following the financial hardship of Covid-19.

Neil Ferguson, chairman of the town council, said: “Any help we can give to people who are struggling is fantastic. That’s one of the things you want to do as a councillor.”

The council will secure vouchers for shops in Egremont and donate them to the most vulnerable in the community.

Residents of Egremont are also being encouraged to donate selection boxes and toys for the appeal.

Mr Ferguson said: “We’ve always put together the shoeboxes to send away to Africa; we are still going to be doing that, but to a lesser extent due to Covid-19.”

Following the decision by MPs not to extend free lunch provision for vulnerable families through half term, the council identified a need to support those struggling.

“People are going to be out of work,” continued Mr Ferguson.

He added that an uncertain Christmas period is on the way. He said: “In tier three, people won’t be able to see families during Christmas.”

A spokesman for the town council said: “It will also help our local businesses who are going through a tough time.

“If anyone would like to make a financial donation then please do get in touch – every penny counts and together we can help everyone in our parish celebrate the festive time without worry.”
