An Egremont girl has been left ‘buzzing’ with the positive response she has received after conducting a clean-up at an underpass in the town.

Demi Gorman took to the East Road garage walkway in an attempt to remove the unsightly litter.

Her mum, Debbie Gorman said: “We go under the underpass daily on our school journey, sometimes four times a day. We often said we should clean it up but I couldn’t do it by myself as I have back problems.

“We always notice when it’s been cleaned up and we are grateful to whoever had done it. Demi always says: ‘why do bigger kids make this mess and break glass, it’s dangerous’. She says the people who clean it up must be very kind people because they clean it all the time."

Demi wanted to keep the pass clean so when more rubbish appeared she brought out the dust pan and brush.

Debbie added: “Demi was pleased that she would be doing a kind thing for our community so on our way home from school we brushed it up. She never expected to have so many wonderful comments and the praise she got was overwhelming. Demi has been buzzing with pride since then. She was given house points at school too.”

The comments have inspired her to do more clean-ups since.

Debbie said: “I’m very proud of her, to know she understands that littering is wrong and she was happy to do something about it to help make it safe for others.”

Demi’s mother and auntie, Jenny Williams, have also been helping Tom Higgins to clear up the area and have started to do their own litter picks around Egremont. She said: “I’m hoping more of the Egremont community will start to help and make a difference.”
