Plans have been approved for a new car park at a Cockermouth church with historic connections to William Wordsworth, despite a number of objections.

Permission for the construction of a small car park at the All Saints Church in the centre of Cockermouth has been approved by Allerdale Council, despite objections from Cockermouth Town Council and Cockermouth Civic Trust over concerns the works may have an impact on the church as a heritage asset.

The car park, which will have space for four vehicles including two disabled parking spaces, was also originally a concern for Historic England.

However, as detailed in a report from the council's planning department, following the submission of revised plans for the car park the organisation provided a "balanced" response that recognised the public benefits of improving access to the church to "sustain the use of the building", against the "neutral impact" of the works.

All Saints Church was built to replace an earlier church destroyed by fire, in which William and Dorothy Wordsworth were baptised.

Their father is buried in the All Saints churchyard.
