An arrest was made in Lancashire under the Terrorism Act following an incident at St Peter's Cathedral on Friday.

A man was arrested at St Peter's Cathedral on Balmoral Road in Lancaster, initially on suspicion of aggravated assault.

The incident occurred at a funeral at around 1pm on Friday.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police, who are now dealing with the case said: "Shortly before 1pm on Friday 16 October 2020, a 20-year-old man was arrested by Lancashire Constabulary officers on suspicion of racially aggravated assault following an incident during a funeral at Lancaster Cathedral.

"Due to the nature of the incident, the man was later arrested under the Terrorism Act 2000 (TACT). He has since been detained under the Mental Health Act.

"Counter Terrorism Policing North West are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident alongside colleagues from Lancashire Constabulary.

Enquiries into the incident are ongoing.
