A FLOOD alert has been put in place for the coastal area of north Cumbria - with another likely tomorrow, says the Met Office.

The Flood Information Service has put out the alert primarily for low lying land, roads and coastal paths at "Mossband Hall, Eden estuary, Burgh Marsh, Port Carlisle, Bowness-on-Solway, Wampool estuary, Waver estuary, Skinburness Marsh, Skinburness and Silloth".

The organisation also indicates that it could also affect the Gretna area and the M6.

A spokesman said "High water level is expected to affect the foreshore as a result of high spring tides and wind.

He added: "We are closely monitoring the situation.

"Our incident response staff are closing flood gates.

"Please plan driving routes to avoid low lying roads near rivers, which may be flooded.

"The high tide in the early hours of Tuesday morning is also likely to reach the Flood Alert criteria."

The information was last updated on Sunday evening.
