Cumbria has recorded a further 72 coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, new figures show.

New Public Health England figures released yesterday evening show Carlisle recorded the biggest daily jump with 17 new cases, followed by Barrow with 16.

The figure is on the incline as 66 cases were recorded on Sunday.

It brings the total number of cases in Cumbria since the start of the pandemic 4,511.

Total number of confirmed cases of coronavirus by Cumbria borough as of Monday, October 12 are as follows:

  • Allerdale - 620 (+12);
  • Barrow - 1,068 (+16);
  • Carlisle - 1,027 (+17);
  • Copeland - 514 (+8);
  • Eden - 315 (+11);
  • South Lakeland - 967 (+8)

University Hospitals Of Morecambe Bay recorded two deaths related to coronavirus. These two people lost their lives on October 10.

Colin Cox, Cumbria’s Director of Public Health, said: “Most of Cumbria is still behind other areas of the region in terms of the COVID-19 infection rate but the picture is changing rapidly and all areas are clearly heading in the wrong direction. The steps we’ve taken in relation to Barrow reflect the deep concern about the situation and the collective determination to get on top of it and avoid even stricter measures."

The Prime Minister has confirmed a new three-tier system of local lockdown measures will be introduced from Wednesday.

Speaking at the House of Commons yesterday, Boris Johnson outlined the updated efforts to curb the rising Covid-19 rates, stating that a second lockdown is not “the right course”.

It has been confirmed that in the last 24 hours, a further 87 people who tested positive for Covid-19 across the country have died, bringing the total number of confirmed reported deaths in hospitals in England to 30,594.

These are deaths of people within 28 days of a positive covid death. The deaths may have occurred at any date, but were only confirmed within the last 24 hours.

Patients were aged between 30 and 96 years old, and all but six patients - aged between 72 and 86 - had known underlying health conditions. Their families have been informed.

Dates of the deaths ranges from 6 October to 12 October, with the majority being on or after 10 October.

The number of deaths of patients with Covid-19 were highest in the North West, with 41, followed by the North East and Yorkshire, with 20.

As of today (Tuesday, October 13), three deaths have been reported with no positive Covid-19 test result.
