Cumbria has seen an increase of more than 60 new coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, new figures has revealed.

In new data released yesterday afternoon, Public Health England revealed that once again Barrow and South Lakeland have had the largest rises in the county.

Barrow saw a rise of 18 cases, bringing the total of cases to 1,052 since the start of the pandemic.

In South Lakes, there were a further 14 cases.

Case data is now being based on people being tested both through 'Pillar 1' - which is in hospitals - and Pillar 2 - which is drive-through test centres and swabs sent by post.

The number of overall coronavirus cases by Cumbria borough as of Sunday, October 11 are as follows:

  • Allerdale - 608 (+9);
  • Barrow - 1,052 (+18);
  • Carlisle - 1,010 (+9);
  • Copeland - 506 (+12);
  • Eden - 304 (+4);
  • South Lakeland - 959 (+14)

This means that cases have risen by 66 across the county.

No deaths related to coronavirus has been recorded in the last 24 hours.

Colin Cox, Cumbria’s Director of Public Health, said: “Most of Cumbria is still behind other areas of the region in terms of the COVID-19 infection rate but the picture is changing rapidly and all areas are clearly heading in the wrong direction. The steps we’ve taken in relation to Barrow reflect the deep concern about the situation and the collective determination to get on top of it and avoid even stricter measures."

The Prime Minister Boris Johnson is due to make his announcement today as coronavirus restrictions and measures change across England.

The changes are expected to take place on Wednesday, having been unveiled on October 12 in the Commons.

The PM will address MPs on the first day of the working week after pressure grew on the government to act amid a rising coronavirus rate.

As part of the government's approach, it is expected a new three-tier system of local lockdown measures will be announced.

Different parts of the country will be split up into "medium", "high" or "very high" local coronavirus alert areas under the new system Boris Johnson is expected to announce on Monday.
