One of Allonby's most popular but coldest event has been cancelled.

The New Year's Day Book will not go ahead because of the restrictions around coronavirus.

The event raises money for Maryport Inshore Rescue.

Organisers took the decision after considering the Covid restrictions and consulting with Maryport Inshore Rescue Service which provides the essential safety cover arrangements each year.

It has attracted increasing numbers of ‘Dookers’ in recent years and has also raised considerable donations, according to one of the organisers Joe Kewin.

"We now get people from all over West Cumbria who take part often wearing fancy dress to take the plunge into the Solway despite the near freezing conditions," he said.

"There are also crowds of onlookers who mingle with the semi naked dookers taking pictures and offering encouragement."

He has asked people who would have taken part to still consider donating money to inshore rescue.

"It is hoped that with fair weather and better news on Covid next year, The Dook will be able to continue."
