The opportunities and support available for those in the Workington area leaving the armed forces was the focus of a discussion between MP Mark Jenkinson and veteran's minister Jonny Mercer.

Mr Jenkinson met with Mr Mercer following a question he put to him in the House of Commons prior to the summer recess, on the issue of employment opportunities for people in Workington leaving the armed forces.

He had previously met with members of the Workington Veteran’s Hub to discuss the issues ex-forces personnel experience when making the shift to civilian life.

Mr Jenkinson said he was pleased to have the opportunity to discuss the issue with Mr Mercer.

"I have long been an advocate for veterans in the workplace. Our ex-forces personnel have much to offer employers in the way of direct and transferable skills," Mr Jenkinson said.

"I wanted to discuss in detail the future career opportunities that are available to those who have served our country in the armed forces, and the support to assist their transition.

"I am keen that they do not just leave their forces career to go into the first civilian job, but they achieve their full potential and use those skills that have served our country so well, to enhance our communities going forward.

"I made the Minister aware of the work that All Together Cumbria is doing for veteran employment as well as the support that Workington Veterans Hub offers to veterans not just on leaving, but ongoing."
