PROPOSALS to build 19 homes on three acres of farmland have been approved.

Carlisle City Council gave the go-head on Monday for two applications, a 14 and a five home development, on land adjacent to the 18th Century Scaurbank property, Netherby Road, Longtown - subject to a legal agreement.

The applicant is listed as Anna Potts from Wanstead, London.

The 14 home site had previously been given planning permission back in 2013.

In a new planning statement, the applicant explained: "The application site is about 0.78 hectares of pastoral land located on the west side of Netherby Road.

“There would be less than substantial harm to the landscape character and visual amenity of the landscape as well as the limited loss of agricultural land.

“There is no reason to consider that this harm is not any worse than that anticipated from the previous scheme granted full planning permission.

“This aside, the proposed dwellings are to be in an accessible location and would fulfil the social role of sustainable development.

“The anticipated economic benefits include spend on construction and creation of full-time construction jobs.

“There would be an increase in the local population likely to deliver some benefits to the local economy.”

The 0.4 hectare five home application is part of the field next to 14 home development and had not been previously submitted.
