LET’S take another trip down memory lane with a delve into our archive of old snaps, in this edition we are looking back at every time Cumbrians did their bit for the environment.

In one set of pictures, we see students from Burlington School in Kirkby making the school grounds bee-friendly.

We see Evelyn Cookson, 10, Phoebe Carr, 10, Megan Loudon, 9, and Kitty Fish, 10 tending to one of their “bee cafes”.

Megan came up with the idea, of supporting the bumble bee population in their area and with her three friends, she organised a series of fundraising events.

The school raised £80 from a “bumble sale”, donations and talks in assembly, using the funds to pay for renovations like the bee cafes.

One snap shows Stuart English, then a year-ten pupil of Alston’s Samuel King’s School. He finished second in a national competition to dream-up ideas to make schools more environmentally friendly.

In one shot Bransty School senior teaching assistant Dawn Fletcher can be seen with her team of eco builders. Bransty School won first place in a Babcock Engineering sponsored eco friendly event at Energus.

Competitors were tasked with dreaming up a sustainable house powered by eco friendly inventions.

In one snap from 2006 we see then MP for Copeland Jamie Reed at Eskdale School which had recently been fitted with an eco-friendly wood-burning heating system.

Seaton Brownies can be seen at St Paul’s Church with their prize winning scarecrow, a tribute to Mother Nature.

We also see St Benedict’s Catholic High School in Whitehaven hosting an eco-friendly awareness day with students selling fair trade chocolates and other treats.

Students from Montreal School can be seen enjoying the great outdoors as they completed a sponsored walk up Dent Fell, raising funds for the school library as well as Cockermouth Mountain Rescue.

Our papers have featured a number of litter picks over the years in which volunteers do their bit for the environment, in one snap we see volunteers from Egremont taking part in The Great Cumbrian litter pick.
