Vermin continues to plague the streets, with councillors demanding action to tackle the persistent problem.

Sharing concern and disgust for the issue at Allerdale Borough Council’s full meeting earlier this week, councillors questioned why the flood of rats and mice in the borough’s streets hasn’t been resolved.

Councillor Peter Gaston broached the subject at the meeting, saying: “At the last meeting, I raised an issue about vermin running wild in our wards.

“We have now seen the headlines in the local newspapers, yet, we are seeing no action taken.

“I ask again – will officers work more closely with members to ensure our wards are free from vermin?”

He continued: “Allerdale Borough Council has the responsibility to control the vermin.”

Speaking at the previous full council meeting, held on July 22, Coun Gaston said: “A number of issues have been flagged up to officers about issues with vermin.

“We have requested Environemtnal Health pest control and enforcement to visit these pieces of land identified by local residents, and enforced on the land owners to clean them up.

“Due to Covid-19 this has not happened, however, can I ask the portfolio folder, in conjunction with officers, to address residents' concerns.”

Councillor Anthony Markley – who is responsible for answering the question – was unable to attend the latest meeting, held on Wednesday evening, and a written response will be shared with councillors on how the team plans to tackle the issue of vermin roaming Allerdale’s streets, and entering residents’ homes.

Acknowledging the worried councillor's comments after the meeting, Coun Markley said: "I do know this is an ongoing issue, and our officers are investigating.

"There aren't any infestations as such around the borough, but if anyone does have an issue, our officers do look into it straight away and try their best to tackle the vermin.

"Unfortunately it is one of those things – there are always rats, but our officers are doing their best."
