This week we’ve been delving into our archives to find photos from the Metal Box company. A huge employer in Carlisle over the years, its roots were in a firm founded by Benjamin Scott in 1799 as a printing, bookselling and stationery business. In 1869 under the direction of Hudson Scott, nephew of Benjamin, the company went on to produce decorate metal boxes from its James Street factory in the city and continues to operate to the present day.

Our photos give a flavour of the factory over the years including the social events that took place for employees and their families.
