A mountain rescue search was launched after concerns were raised that four friends had failed to return when expected from Scafell Pike.

Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team were alerted shortly after 8.30pm on Monday that a group of four men had set off to walk up Scafell Pike at 11.30am and had not returned.

The team made four attempts to find the group using "PhoneFind" technology, all of which were unsuccessful.

The team was also unable to speak to the individual who had alerted the team by phone.

A spokesman for Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team said: "A team member tried to find him by checking car parks at the head of the valley, with no success.

"Local taxi firms and pubs were phoned in case they had walked out via Eskdale, with no success.

"Eventually, contact was made and the four were safe and well, with their friend in Keswick, heading home."
