Emergency services have responded to a call by four males who got lost on Scafell Pike after saying they had taken the "easy route" up.

Wasdale Mountain Rescue received a call by police on September 5 at 5.55pm.

The four men, aged between 27 to 29 said they had taken the "easy route" up Scafell Pike from Wasdale Head and, having failed to reach the top, were lost in poor visibility.

Runners that were doing the Bob Graham round put their challenge on hold in order to help the party.

The mountain rescue team leader was able to contact the men by mobile phone and spoke to one of the runners, who agreed to lead the party to Broad Crag Col and point them in the direction of Lingmell Col and the path back to Wasdale Head.

One of the group had a panic attack and others were struggling with aching limbs, with all four lacking the confidence to find the route down. The rescue team decided to meet the group and walk them down.

Use of the Phonefind app traced the men's progress to Broad Crag Col where they had been left by the runners, but more calls from the team leader were needed to give them the confidence to begin and then continue their descent.

They were met by the team then it took a further three hours before they arrived back at Wasdale Head. The group of four were joined by two more of their party, who had successfully climbed the Pike but got lost on their descent.

Wasdale Mountain Rescue said: "A big thank you to the runners who selflessly put their challenge behind schedule to help a group in distress."

Eight members of the mountain rescue team worked on the call out until 1.30am on September 6.
