FORMER footballing teammates of a popular young farm worker who died in July were reunited in his honour.

Stu Sim, of Haydon Bridge, grew up playing football in his home village, and he was a popular member of the junior team.

In July, it is believed Stu (26) headed to the farm in nearby Langley were he had worked for the best part of a decade and took his own life.

In his memory, his older brother Phil, the current manager of Haydon Bridge's Sunday League team, organised a game between the team and a squad of players who grew up playing alongside Stu at Haydon Bridge.

The Stu Sim Memorial Trophy was organised to raise money for mental health charity Mind, with the Sim family keen to promote the importance of people opening up about their mental health problems.

While Phil manages Hexham and District Sunday League outfit Haydon Bridge Social Club, his loyalties lay with the Stu Sim XI on the day as he joined Stu's friends, which included many of the Sunday League squad, in the line-up.

Local businessman Brian Welch, and UK Industrial Tapes who sponsored a special commemorative kit for the day., were thanked by organisers for their contributions.

The football match raised more than £1,700 for charity, smashing the initial fund-raising goal of £250.
