Kirkby Stephen Mountain Rescue Team covers quite a large area of South East Cumbria.

The area stretches across much of the Upper Eden Valley, as well a significant section of the Howgill fells – which are now part of the Yorkshire Dales National Park – and some of the Northern Pennines.

The terrain is variable, with few large crags, and there are many other features which can prove hazardous, such as deep cut river beds and large areas of limestone pavement, which can be sharp and slippery.

The team’s area is crossed by a number of long distance paths, including the Pennine Way and the very popular Coast to Coast path.
