A CAR PARK will be closed until 2021 as essential flood defence works take place in Carlisle.

Bitts Park car park will be closed from Tuesday August 4 until March 31 2021 to make way for Environment Agency flood improvements which are vital to protect the city from future flood risk.

Alternative parking will be available in Castle car park, The Sands Centre car park and Swifts Banks car park. A spokesperson for Carlisle City Council said: "When using the car parks, customers are advised to follow social distancing guidance and if possible, pay by card of contactless, rather than using cash and park in alternate bays.

"Over night closures of Caldew Riverside, Castle and West Walls car parks have been reinstated."

Most council car parks provide contactless payment including Apple Pay.
