This year England football fans should have been donning their tops to support their national team in the Euro 2020 campaign.

But after the coronavirus lockdown put a halt to the tournament, seeing it postponed to 2021, it was not to be.

So instead we thought we would take a look in our archives and head back to 2004 when people across Cumbria flocked to the pub to watch the games on a big screen.

Unfortunately it wasn’t the ending fans had hoped for, with England going out in the quarter-finals to Portugal on penalties.

But the tournament had its share of highs and lows and our photographers was on hand to capture some of them.

England began the campaign with a group loss to France but bounced back with victories over Switzerland and Croatia.

Then came the crunch quarter-final with eventual runners-up Portugal where the two sides were deadlocked at 2-2 after extra time.

But the dreaded penalty shootout did not go England’s way, with Portugal going through 6-5 and England slipped out of the tournament.
