PROPOSALS have been submitted for Grade II* listed stables at Netherby Hall.

Carlisle District Council has received an application from the hall's owners Gerald and Margo Smith last week.

Plans for unit 6 of the stables includes a “dog leg stair and alterations to internal fittings”.

The application form however says that work already been completed on June 1.

According to the Design and Access statement: “The Coachman’s House was first listed in 1984 along with the Stables complex, at Grade II, for its group value.

“The Coachman’s House and Stables complex was probably all built by Rev Robert Graham c1780 following his succession to Netherby in 1757.

“These buildings are shown on Greenwood’s map of 1823 and as existing structures on Architect William Burn’s 1833 drawings for the proposed alterations to Netherby for Sir James Graham.

“The Coachman’s House and Stables complex is to be restored to be used again as stables, coach-houses and groom’s quarters and to house all the facilities required for the maintenance and upkeep of the horses and carriages.

“The North Wing is to continue to house individual apartments.”

It adds: “We believe these proposals contribute to the composition of the stables complex as a whole. In addition, we believe the proposals contribute to the setting of the Grade II* Netherby Hall.”
