A BRAMPTON pub has created a ‘secret’ beer garden so drinkers and diners can maintain social distancing.

The Howard Arms Hotel, on Front Street, like many others has opened after the lockdown and implemented a number of safety measures to keep people well in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

Ever since it opened earlier this month its been doing brisk business, including the accommodation side, and has even had to turn people away because of the Covid-19 regulations.

To allow people drink and dine in safety landlady Ruth Seggie, and husband, landlord Andrew, both designed the outdoor area which was inspired on a recent trip to Edinburgh.

Ruth said: “The space outside was always part covered but when we all started coming out of lockdown we wanted to make use of it and give people more opportunity to socially distance.

“Inside the pub we have had to lose tables because of the social distancing.

“People have been very understanding though.

“It’s got a corrugated roof like the one we saw at a ‘pop-up’ beer garden at Waverley railway station in Edinburgh, that’s where we took the inspiration.

“Because of the regulations everyone has to be seated and we’ve had to turn people away.

The couple first came to the bar in 2018 but Andrew comes from the area.

In 2019 however the pub closed for a time because of refurbishment.

Ruth added: “I think Brampton has such a nice community spirit, it’s a lively little town and I love the fact that people speak to each other, to say things like good morning.

“We took over in 2018 and were in for five weeks before work started on the refurbishment.

“We’ve had three opening nights, one in December 5, 2018, when we refurbished in the following Febraury and after the lockdown.”

Though people can just turn up Ruth recommends booking ahead.
