JOBS look set to go after a Carlisle bingo hall announced its closure because of the coronavirus' impact.

Buzz Bingo, on Englishgate Plaza in Botchergate, has announced it will not reopen, along with 26 other clubs across the country, as part of a proposed nationwide restructuring of the business.

A total of 573 jobs are at risk.

The firm said the move is part of a Company Voluntary Arrangement to secure its long-term future.

The other 91 clubs, including the nearest to Carlisle, in Dumfries, will have a phased reopening from August 6 but only 12 will open on the first day.

The decision to close the bingo hall was announced on the Carlisle club's Facebook page on Wednesday.

It said: "Everyone has been impacted by coronavirus including us here at Buzz Bingo, which means we have had to make some difficult decisions.

"It’s with a heavy heart we announce that Buzz Bingo Carlisle will not be re-opening and is closing permanently.

"We’re really sad to bring you this news as we know this will be a difficult time for our community and our colleagues.

"We’d like to thank all our customers and colleagues for their ongoing support and for making our community amazing."

Chris Matthews, CEO of the group, said: "While we are planning the phased reopening of our clubs from August 6, as many of you will understand, with our clubs closed since March 21, coronavirus has had a significant impact on the entire leisure and hospitality industry.

"We have therefore had to make some difficult decisions about how we move forward and ensure that we protect the future of Buzz Bingo.

"It is, therefore, with sadness that I need to share with you that 26 of our clubs will not reopen.

"We know that we are more than just a club, we are part of your community, and for that, I am really sorry.
