Police are asking those who are suffering from mental illness to seek support.

In an appeal on social media, a spokesperson for Cumbria Constabulary said: “Suicide amounts for almost four times as many deaths as those resulting from road traffic accidents in the UK, with an average of 50 people taking their own lives in Cumbria each year.”

The spokesperson added that the North has the highest suicide rates in the country and it is the leading cause of death in males between the ages of 20 and 49.

Police said: “If you or someone you know is struggling to cope, there are many organisations that can help.”

The North East and North Cumbria Suicide Prevention Network is available for information on self help and the services available. Its website provides support as well as information on helping others who may be struggling and useful contact details.

The Samaritans helpline is available at all hours every day on 116123 for those who are feeling suicidal. Alternatively, contact www.stopsuicidenenc.org

In an emergency, the public are asked to always dial 999.
