A college in west Cumbria is one of 70 schools nationally to receive an award for exceptional care of its staff.

Energy Coast UTC, based at Lillyhall in Workington, has received the Teach Well School Gold Award in the Coronavirus Pandemic category for exceptional care of the physical and mental wellbeing of its staff.

The head of Year 11 at Energy Coast UTC, Rob Phizacklea, nominated the college for the award. He said: ā€œI felt that the award would be an appropriate way to thank staff for their ongoing support during lockdown. We are therefore delighted to see that our efforts have been recognised by a national organisation.ā€

Initiatives have been introduced during the pandemic to support both staff and students including Zoom meetings with a school counsellor, virtual team briefings and working-from-home resources, enabling staff and students to stay in touch online.

Principal Cherry Tingle said: "Iā€™m very proud of how our staff team has pulled together during this very difficult time.

"Maintaining morale is vital in times of stress and we are doing all we can to ensure that our staff members feel listened to and supported. With this programme of support and with their determination, skill and commitment we have been able to deliver an excellent and comprehensive home-learning programme."
