Nominations continue to roll in for our Person of the Week, the News & Star feature which each week shines a spotlight on someone who has achieved something special.

That might be a milestone in their career, selfless service to the community, or just recognition for a simply amazing person who you think deserves applause.

Nominated this week are Eileen Miller and Maureen Wilson, also known as the Denton Holme Duo.

The pair have been selected for all the hard work they’re doing for the Carlisle Covid-19 Community Help group

A spokesman for the group said: “Maureen and Eileen came along just at the right time, when we needed some new regular volunteers.

“We now couldn’t do without them and we are so grateful for the amount of time they selflessly devote to the project.

“There are still many people who need help and support.

"We are starting to see more and more newly vulnerable individuals and families, and so we value regular, reliable volunteers very much indeed.”

The spokesman continued: “Eileen and Maureen, who both live in Denton Holme, are friends who saw the need in the community and who encouraged each other to come along and support the group.

“Having started off with a few hours here and there, they are now regular volunteers who give up huge amounts of their time each week to work in the food hub making up parcels, collecting donations from all over the city, picking up our regular Marks and Spencer donations."

Maureen said: “I chose to volunteer for the Carlisle Covid-19 Community Help group when I realised how fortunate I was not to be self-isolating or shielding and I had lots of free time.

“It has been my pleasure to do the shopping etc for those less fortunate than myself, knowing this act is making a difference.”

Eileen said: “Maureen and I are friends and when she told me about the volunteering work she was doing and said I would be welcome to come along, I thought I would give it a go.

“I’ve really enjoyed helping people. It’s a really great team, we work hard but have good craic. It’s a good feeling to know we are supporting people who really need it.”
