FIREFIGHTERS are urging people to remember to blow out candles before leaving their homes after three fire crews, a paramedic and ambulance were called to an address in Carlisle

The alarm was raised after a flickering flame could be seen through an upstairs window of the property in Dobinson Road, Raffles, at 11.15pm on Saturday.

The caller tried knocking but got no answer and called 999.

Firefighters from Carlisle East, Carlisle West and Wigton responded, along with colleagues from the North West Ambulance Service.

Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service said: "It turned out to be a candle burning in an appropriate holder, and no fire service action was required.

"It could have easily been avoided if the candle had been blown out before leaving the property."

Carlisle East was then called to help the ambulance service gain entry to a property in Margaret Creighton Gardens, off London Road, where the occupant had collapsed and needed medical aid.
