A Maryport man who carried out a religiously aggravated assault on a police officer has been tagged.

Mark James Orchard, 29, of Elizabeth Street, appeared before magistrates at the Workington court on Tuesday.

Orchard admitted assaulting PC Carty with intent to resist or prevent lawful apprehension on October 20 of last year.

The court found the assault was religiously aggravated.

Magistrates also heard that between October 1 and October 20, Orchard "sent a message facebook profile introduction that was grossly offensive or of an indecent, obscene or menacing character".

Orchard was handed a community order with two requirements: he must be at his home address for eight weeks between 7pm and 7am and the curfew will be electronically monitored; he must carry out up to 10 Rehabilitation Activity Requirement days.

He must pay £85 costs and £90 victim surcharge.
