ONE man is in a critical condition and another has suffered serious injuries after two separate crashes in the same night.

A man in his early 40s, who was driving a white van, is in hospital in Preston in a critical but stable condition.

The crash - which police say involved a van overturning - happened on the northbound carriageway of the M6 motorway, between Tebay and Shap.

Cumbria Constabulary, Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service, the North West Ambulance Service and Highways England traffic officers were all called to the scene.

The southbound carriageway of the M6 between junctions 38 and 39 was also temporarily closed to allow for an air ambulance to land at the scene.

A spokesman for the Cumbria Roads Police unit on the night said: "Patrols attending a serious road traffic collision on the M6 between junction 38 and junction 39 northbound, which is fully blocked."

Meanwhile, a man suffered serious injuries after a crash in west Cumbria.

The driver involved in the single vehicle crash on the B5345 at Sandwith - a man in his 40s - suffered serious injuries.

Police say the man's red Audi A3 left the road and ended up in a nearby field shortly after 11.15pm on Wednesday night.

The road remained closed between the junctions of Mirehouse Road and Byerstead Road until yesterday morning (July 2). Cumbria Constabulary say they are investigating the second crash and are appealing for anyone with any information to call 101, referencing incident number 274 of July 1.
