Artists are being invited to take part in a online exhibition exploring the beauty of the west coast of Cumbria, in response to mining plans.

Postcards from Cumbria is encouraging professional and non-professional artists to take part in celebrating the wildlife, geology and heritage of the area.

Artist Marianne Birkby said: “There is a new plan to mine for coal deep underneath the Irish Sea from St Bees on the West coast of Cumbria. The mine proposes to extend to within five miles from Sellafield in one direction and to the Solway Firth in the other.

“This expo is in response to that plan to revive coal mining. The area is stunningly beautiful and has a long history of attracting artists and poets, from JMW Turner, who sought inspiration from St Bees Head, to Norman Nicholson, who has been dubbed ‘the geologists' poet’."
