A Carlisle man has appeared in court charged with assaulting, ill-treating, neglecting or abandoning a child.

The 40-year-old – who can not be named for legal reasons – appeared before Carlisle’s magistrates’ court yesterday.

He faced four charges of wilfully assaulting, ill-treating, neglecting, abandoning or exposing a child under the age of 16 in a manner likely to cause him unnecessary suffering or injury to health. The man did not enter a plea.

The charges relate to alleged activity between June 26 and July 25 last year.

In the hearing, John Moran was representing the prosecution and Malcolm Dodds was defending, during the short hearing.

District Judge Gerald Chalk told the defendant: “I am formally sending you to appear at crown court sitting in Carlisle. You will make your first appearance on the 26th of June.

“You are bailed to be at that court at 9.30am.”
