A BEEKEEPING group in Cumbria is encouraging the county to consider the importance of the insect ahead of World Bee Day next week.
World Bee Day, a United Nations initiative, is this coming Wednesday.
The purpose of the day is to help highlight the vital role bees play in ecosystems across the world, as well as the threat faced by bees from climate change.
Bees play a critical role in keeping the human food supply going - the vast majority of the crops relied on for food are pollinated by bees.
Given the crucial role bees play in keeping humans alive, Penrith Beekeepers are helping to mark World Bee Day by encouraging county residents to take a look at the resources published on the group’s website.
These include a recipe using honey from well-known Cumbrian chef John Crouch, and a guide to identify bee-friendly plants that can be placed in the garden, providing local bees with the nectar and pollen they need throughout the year.
Particularly appropriate for the current coronavirus lockdown, the website has a range of home learning activities for youngsters.
The website also has a handy introductory guide to beekeeping, and a selection of recommended books for those who want to learn more.
