Heroes of the Second World War were remembered by families and schools across Copeland on VE Day 75.

In homes and socially distanced VE Day celebrations, veterans were remembered and thanked for their service on the 75th anniversary of victory in Europe.

Waberthwaite Church of England Primary School set its pupils a home learning task of designing a Union Jack display using creative or unusual materials.

In Mirehouse, Tony Pearce and Kevin Thompson drove a VE Day float around the area, playing beloved wartime classics from speakers outside care homes and resident’s houses.

Muncaster Castle had planned to have a three-day Victorious Food Fest to celebrate the event but it unfortunately had to cancel when the coronavirus outbreak hit. However, organisers made sure that the event did not go unacknowledged, creating a spectacular light display in the grounds.

And volunteers from Phoenix Youth Club made sure families had a special afternoon tea to mark the occasion. As well as holding a street party on Moor Row, volunteers supplied food boxes and activity packs to residents of the village.

Joanne Pears, lead youth development worker said: “Totally overwhelmed at the response of the community, both from the old and youngest members of the village.

“Today showed what we can achieve even under the hardest of circumstances when we all help each other.”

The youth club is still supporting young people in Frizington, Moor Row and Cleator Moor despite being forced to close their centres during lockdown. The clubs are still running via online sessions.
