A CARLISLE man has been jailed for committing an eighth restraining order breach by visiting the home of his former partner.

Elijah Ali, 30, went to the city address of Anne-Marie Storey just before midnight on March 5. She heard banging at the rear of her property, thought someone was trying to get in, and saw Ali in her garden “shouting that he was going to smash her windows”, Carlisle Crown Court heard yesterday (April 30).

Ali ran and hid in a neighbour’s garden before being located by police, who noted he was slurring his words and “under the influence”. When arrested, he stated: “Just put me in a cell.”

Earlier that day, he had stolen around £31 worth of food and alcohol from a convenience store on Cumwhinton Road.

Ali admitted breaching a restraining order which had been imposed in February, 2017. This prohibits him from contacting Ms Storey - with whom he had been in a six-year relationship - and attending her address. However, the court was told he had flouted that order on seven previous occasions and received a number of of prison sentences for doing so.

For the latest breach, Ali, of Baird Road, Carlisle, was jailed for 14 months by Judge Nicholas Barker. No separate penalty was imposed for the shop theft he also admitted.
