A group of volunteers in Distington organised a game of bingo on their street, with social distancing in place, for those who may have been bored or lonely in isolation.

Andrea Martin of Distington Fareshare organised a game of social distance bingo on her street, Barngill Place in Distington.

She ran the game with her son and daughter, Nathan and Courtney Martin as well as her friend Charlotte Humphreys, also from Distington Fareshare.

Andrea said: "We're always out doing the Clap for NHS anyway.

"One of the residents asked about doing bingo.

Neighbours sat outside their houses to take part in the game and residents of Hinnings Road opposite Barngill Road couldn't resist joining in.

"It's just a case of thinking about different things to do for people that doesn't involve being close together."

Books for the game were donated by Distington Club for Young People.

Residents were asked to give prizes for the game and the influx of donations meant that the organisers could hold a raffle also.

The raffle raised £102 for Charlotte's fundraiser in aid of West Cumberland Hospital which aims to purchase tablets so that patients can still speak to their families.

The game proved to be a hit among the residents of both streets. Andrea said: "People are asking us to do more."
