THE organisers of the award-winning Lakesman triathlon have raised nearly £800 for frontline NHS staff.

Phil and Marie Whitehead wanted to support their many keyworker athletes so set up a prize draw and invited donations.

“The Lakesman family is very special to be part of, and many of our athletes and volunteers have found themselves on the front line in the fight against Covid-19, not only in the NHS and care provision, but teaching, providing electricity, gas or water, keeping transport running, supermarket staff and much more,” said Marie.

“We decided after speaking to quite a lot of people that we would do something for frontline NHS staff.”

Everyone who donated to the fund was entered into a prize draw with the winner receiving a free Lakesman 2021 place and pair of Chivers trainers.

The money will be used to provide care packages for staff in: The Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle; The West Cumberland Hospital, Whitehaven; Christie’s Hospital, Manchester; Darlington Hospital; and Blackpool Victoria.

Marie said: “We were delighted with the response but not surprised. A lot of our athletes have pretty massive financial and health pressures. It’s great being able to do something to help and we were keen for the money to go directly to frontline staff to spend on whatever they need at the time.”

Marie and Phil have also been using their Lakesman van to support Carlisle Foodbank.

This year's event had to be cancelled, but the next one is scheduled for June 20, 2021.

The full Lakesman involves a 2.4-mile swim in Derwent Water, 112-mile cycle ride and 26.2-mile run. There is also a half iron man event.
