A Keswick mum has been entertaining thousands of families online with some creative storytelling.

Becky Cole is a storyteller and usually works at the town’s Theatre by the Lake and also in museums and bookshops.

Her regular work has all been put on hold with the corona crisis but this has not stopped her telling stories, with the help of her puppet friend, Digby.

Becky has set up a Facebook page, Digby Days, and is doing live story telling twice a week.

The last one was watched by more than 2,000 people from as far away as Canada.

“I usually do story telling and some singing for the under 5s at the theatre three times a month,” said Becky, who has two children, George, 10, and Henry, eight.

“When I was put on furlough by the theatre I thought it would be good to go online for the people that regularly come to see me.

“I thought there might be about 20 or 30 Keswick people, the response has been unexpected but lovely, it’s great to think so many people are watching us.”

Becky has been contacted by a woman in Canada and also a nursery in the north east whose children have been tuning in from home.

While the families love Digby and the stories, they also give parents the time to make a quick cuppa, said Becky.

In the past, she has done story telling in the town’s museum and also the bookshop, Bookends.

“I love working in the community,” she said.

While the schools are closed Becky is home schooling her sons.

“I trained as a primary school teacher so I’m really enjoying it. We have a timetable and lots of outdoor activities, breaks and snacks.”

Henry has clearly been inspired by his mum.

He and Digby facetime his grandparents in the north east every day and read them a story.

“It’s a lovely way for them to stay in touch – and he gets lots of reading done!” said Becky.

The stories are read live at noon every Monday and Friday on Digby Days, on Facebook.
