During the current coronavirus pandemic Oak Tree Animals’ Charity have been receiving calls about household cleaning products and what is safe to use when you have pets.

The charity recommend locking all cleaning products away in a pet-safe cupboard so your pets cannot access them and ensure you avoid leaving them in an area your pet can access them during cleaning.

If you are concerned about your pet eating or drinking a toxic cleaning product follow these step to keep it safe:

n Remember to lock all cleaning products away in a pet-safe cupboard ensuring your pets cannot access them.

n Try to keep your pet out of the room whilst you are cleaning, and for some time afterwards until they are dry if you have used products that may be harmful to your pet. Use clean water to wipe down surfaces after using a cleaning product which will stop your pet coming into contact with the chemicals.

n Often pets enjoy chewing and exploring empty packets or bottles, make sure to leave all empty containers out of reach too.

n If you have used bleach in the toilet, make sure you close the lid to prevent your pet from drinking from it.

n You could use pet safe and environmentally friendly solutions instead of commercial cleaning products. They are more pet friendly and could be cheaper too. Use baking soda, vinegar, lemon juice, or washing soda.

n The main products of concern are, bleach, laundry and dishwasher capsules or liquid, oven cleaner, glass, carpet and floor cleaner, drainer unblockers, all purpose bathroom cleaners.

If you think your pet may have consumed any of the above products, do not hesitate contact your vet immediately.
