Nominations are rolling in for our Person of the Week, the News & Star feature that each week shines a spotlight on the someone who has achieved something special.

It might be a milestone in their career or selfless service to the community, or recognition for a simply amazing person who you think deserves recognition.

During trying times Adam Sawczuk has been nominated by Councillor Lisa Brown after he became one of the first people to agree to set up the Carlisle Covid-19 Community help group.

She said: “He saw that the need for help would only grow even in the early days and was driven by a desire to make sure we stayed ahead of the need by getting it right from the start.

“He looks after all our social media accounts and provides calm advice and reassurance to people pretty much 24 hours a day.

“As a mental health professional in his former career, he is keen to make sure that the teams stay well and supported as the volume of cases and problems increases.

“Adam managed to track down Paul Ford, group chairman – degroupuk.com, through a website. The website takes PPE donations from companies around the country and gets them to where they are needed.

Proud of the work he has put in she continued: “Adam and Paul have been working around the clock to ensure deliveries are getting to frontline workers in Carlisle.

Adam has overcome medical difficulties of his own, so for him to fully throw himself into this is amazing. Nothing we ask him is too much and he is always willing to go the extra mile.

He is currently working to help find funding for some 3D printed visors for the NHS, and I truly believe with his drive he will help achieve this.

On a final note, Mrs Brown added “Adam was to be an usher at a friend’s wedding in April that sadly got cancelled. The bride to be is a frontline nurse at The Cumberland Infirmary.

“When Adam heard about the shortages of PPE he made it his personal project to track down PPE for the hospital and local services.

“Adam is not someone who would accept praise or recognition for what he does so I think he will be very surprised and reluctant to accept it.”
