RESIDENTS of Castle Carrock took part in a nationwide litter picking event and picked up 20 bags of rubbish.

A total of about 20 volunteers including children as well as pupils in year six from Castle Carrock from Primary School took part in the pick to help the environment.

The team managed to collect about 20 bags of rubbish as well as strange sundry items and remains of a car crash.

Every year, an estimated eight million tonnes of litter enters the world’s oceans. Plastic poses the biggest threat to marine wildlife as it doesn’t just disappear.

However, teams like this in Castle Carrock help to eliminate the amount that enters the ocean.

Tricia Meynell, who helps out in a number of litter picks, explained: “One volunteer collected so much of the strange larger items that it filled his car boot.

“We do this annually.

“Most of the rubbish is cans, bottles, and takeaway containers.

“We found a huge stash of strange glass vials about 3ins long and half an inch diameter that no one has any idea what they are.Sadly people have already started dropping little again. Particularly now that so many people are heading to the fells to walk.

“Just two days after the little pick there was rubbish just being left beside cars.”
